Candlemas pattern Z5157 chalice vase shape 2357

A truly exceptional and very rare vase by Daisy Makeig Jones c1918. I've been trying to buy this for several years and finally this beautiful piece is here! Condition is just amazing; no chips, cracks or any restoration. Gilding is all intact and the glaze is stunning.

Influenced by Kay Nielsen's designs for the story "Prince Lindworm" in the book "East of the sun and west of the moon" published in 1914, this was one of Daisy Makeig Jones's most intricate and sought after patterns. The designs for Candlemas were all black Fairyland, with narrow bands of blue lustre containing the church bell ropes, as imagined in Daisy's version of the story. The ropes are populated with elves and fairies clinging on.

The large white candles have human heads instead of flames, surrounded by aureoles of red and green. The inside neck of the vase is decorated with the flaming wheel pattern, as is the foot of the vase. 17cms tall.
